MARC S. ARKOVITZ, MD

Dr. Arkovitz was educated at Union College where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1986 and graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude. He earned his MD degree at The New York University School of Medicine in 1990. Dr Arkovitz received his general surgery training at the New York University Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital Center. During his training he spent a year as a visiting surgical resident in the departments of general and pediatric surgery at Baragwanath Hospital in the township of Soweto, South Africa. He also performed a two-year research fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Medical Center where he studied mechanisms of lung injury in the newborn and injured child.

Dr. Arkovitz completed his pediatric surgery fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in 2001 and then stayed on for a year as a member of the faculty. While in Cincinnati, Dr. Arkovitz was instrumental in developing a clinical center of excellence for caring for children born with congenital diaphragmatic hernia as well as working on the basic science of diaphragmatic development in the lab. He was also the surgical member of the antenatal counseling group.

Dr. Arkovitz joined the faculty at Children’s Hospital of New York Presbyterian in 2002 as assistant professor. He maintains a strong interest in children with congenital diaphragmatic hernia and is continuing his lab research here. His other interests include all aspects of pediatric surgery including neonatal, trauma, oncology, ECMO, airway and thoracic, urologic and minimal access surgery. He has published and presented papers at several international and national meetings on a variety of topics including trauma, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, minimally invasive surgery and gastro-esophageal reflux. In addition, Dr. Arkovitz performed the first laparoscopic pull-through for Hirshprung’s disease in the former Yugoslavia.
